I built this ranking system because I was frustrated with subjective, media-driven UFC rankings.
No opinions. No popularity contests. Just math, applied consistently to every fighter. Here's exactly how it works.
The rankings answer one question: "Who is performing best right now?"
I use a rolling 36-month window — long enough for meaningful data, short enough to reflect current form. Fighters are ranked on their recent performance, not what they did 5 years ago.
A legend who's been losing lately will rank below a rising contender on a streak. That's not disrespect — that's just math being honest about current performance.
Recent fights (0-6 months) have more impact than older ones. Keeps rankings responsive to current form.
Beating a significantly higher-rated opponent earns bonus points. Rewards fighters who step up.
Average opponent rating is factored into the final score. Quality of competition matters.
All fight data is sourced from publicly available official records and cross-verified for accuracy.
I'm building FightIndex.io solo because the MMA community deserves better than popularity-based rankings. This methodology will continue to evolve — I'm always looking for ways to make the system more accurate and fair.
